On Killing A Tree in Urdu/Hindi
Stanza I
It takes much time to kill a tree,
Not a simple jab of the knife
Will do it. It has grown
Slowly consuming the earth,
Rising out of it, feeding
Upon its crust, absorbing
Years of sunlight, air, water,
And out of its leperous hide
Sprouting leaves.
Darakt/ped ko maarne mein bohot waqt lagta hai,
Ek aasaan chaku ka war kaafi nahi hoga
Yeh dheere dheere zameen ko istemal karte hue bara hota hai,
Zameen se ubhar kar, zameen ki satah se khuraak lete hue,
Saalo tak roshni, hawa, paani ko apne andar samete hue,
Aur apni purani, bimar jild se
Patte nikalte hue.
Stanza II
So hack and chop
But this alone wont do it.
Not so much pain will do it.
The bleeding bark will heal
And from close to the ground
Will rise curled green twigs,
Miniature boughs
Which if unchecked will expand again
To former size.
To kaato aur chakoo maaro,
Lekin sirf yeh kaafi nahi hoga.
Itna dard kaafi nahi hoga.
Khoon se lathpath chaal theek ho jayega
Aur zameen ke qareeb se
Dubara hare bhale tahaniyaan uthenge,
Chote se shaakhein
Jo agar roka na gaya to
Pehle jitna bara ho jayenge.
Stanza III
No,
The root is to be pulled out –
Out of the anchoring earth;
It is to be roped, tied,
And pulled out – snapped out
Or pulled out entirely,
Out from the earth-cave,
And the strength of the tree exposed,
The source, white and wet,
The most sensitive, hidden
For years inside the earth.
Nahi,
Jad ko ukhadhna zaroori hai –
Zameen se mazbooti se jude hue;
Isay rassi se bandh kar, kheench kar,
Ukhadhna hoga – ya to tod kar
Ya puri tarah se kheench kar,
Zameen ke gufa se bahar,
Aur darakt ki taqat ko saamne lana hoga,
Sote ko, jo safed aur geela hai,
Jo sabse nazuk, chhupa hota hai
Saalo tak zameen ke andar.
Stanza IV
Then the matter
Of scorching and choking
In sun and air,
Browning, hardening,
Twisting, withering,
And then it is done.
Phir baat aati hai
Dhoop aur hawa mein jalne aur ghoontne ki,
Badal kar bhoora hone, mazboot hone,
Murne, murjhane ki,
Aur phir kaam khatam ho jata hai.
