Our Casuarina Tree

Like a huge Python, winding round and round
The rugged trunk, indented deep with scars,
Up to its very summit near the stars,
A creeper climbs, in whose embraces bound
No other tree could live. But gallantly
The giant wears the scarf, and flowers are hung
In crimson clusters all the boughs among,
Whereon all day are gathered bird and bee;
And oft at nights the garden overflows
With one sweet song that seems to have no close,
Sung darkling from our tree, while men repose.
Jaise ek bara ajgar lapeta ho gol gol,
Yeh mote tane ko, jisme gehre nishaan,
Oopar tak, jahan taare hain aasman,
Ek bel chadhti hai, itni zor se lipti hai
Ke koi aur darakht/ped jee nahi sakta.
Lekin yeh bara darakht isse apnaye hue hai,
Aur har shakh par lal phool sajaye hue hai.
Jahan din bhar chidiya aur madhumakkhiyan aati hain;
Aur raat ko baagh bhar jata hai madhur aawaz se,
Jo lagta hai kabhi khatam na hogi,
Hamare is darakht se ek pyari dhun sunai deti hai,
Jab log sukoon se so rahe hote hain.
When first my casement is wide open thrown
At dawn, my eyes delighted on it rest;
Sometimes, and most in winter,—on its crest
A gray baboon sits statue-like alone
Watching the sunrise; while on lower boughs
His puny offspring leap about and play;
And far and near kokilas hail the day;
And to their pastures wend our sleepy cows;
And in the shadow, on the broad tank cast
By that hoar tree, so beautiful and vast,
The water-lilies spring, like snow enmassed.
Jab subah meri khidki puri khulti hai,
To sabse pehle meri nazar is darakht par padti hai;
Kabhi kabhi, khas kar sardi ke dino me,
Iski choti par ek bhoora bandar chup chap baitha hota hai,
Suraj ke nikalne ka manzar dekhte hue.
Neeche ki shakhon par uske chhote bache uchalte koodte hain,
Aur dur-dur tak kokila chidiya geet ga kar subah ka swagat karti hai.
Sust gaiyan chara charne ke liye ja rahi hoti hain,
Aur is bade, purane darakht ki chhaya talab par padh rahi hoti hai.
Jisme safed kamal ke phool khilte hain, jaise baraf ki chadar bichi ho.
But not because of its magnificence
Dear is the Casuarina to my soul:
Beneath it we have played; though years may roll,
O sweet companions, loved with love intense,
For your sakes, shall the tree be ever dear.
Blent with your images, it shall arise
In memory, till the hot tears blind mine eyes!
What is that dirge-like murmur that I hear
Like the sea breaking on a shingle-beach?
It is the tree’s lament, an eerie speech,
That haply to the unknown land may reach.
Lekin sirf iski khoobsurti ki wajah se
Yeh Casuarina darakht mere dil ke kareeb nahi hai.
Iske neeche humne bachpan me khela hai; chahe saal beet jayein,
O mere pyare saathiyon, jo mujhe jaan se bhi zyada pyare the,
Tumhari yaadon ki wajah se yeh darakht hamesha pyara rahega.
Tumhari yaadon se juda, yeh hamesha meri yaadon me rahega,
Jab tak meri aankhon me aansu na aa jayein!
Yeh kaun si udaasi bhari aawaz sunai de rahi hai,
Jaise samundar ki lehrain kinare se takra rahi ho?
Yeh darakht ka dukh bhara shikwa hai, ek ajeeb si boli,
Shayad yeh kisi anjaane desh tak pohanchti ho.
Unknown, yet well-known to the eye of faith!
Ah, I have heard that wail far, far away
In distant lands, by many a sheltered bay,
When slumbered in his cave the water-wraith
And the waves gently kissed the classic shore
Of France or Italy, beneath the moon,
When earth lay trancèd in a dreamless swoon:
And every time the music rose,—before
Mine inner vision rose a form sublime,
Thy form, O Tree, as in my happy prime
I saw thee, in my own loved native clime.
Anjaana, phir bhi imaan ki nazar se pehchana hua!
Ah, maine yeh dukh bhari aawaz bohot door suni hai,
Door deshon me, jahaan samundar ke kone shanti se chhupe hain,
Jab paani ka bhoot apni gufa me soya hota tha,
Aur lehrain pyaar se France ya Italy ke purane kinare chhuti thi,
Chandni raat me, jab zameen gehri neend me soyi hoti thi.
Har baar jab yeh sur utha,
Meri aankhon ke samne ek pyari tasveer aayi,
O mere pyare darakht, jaise bachpan me tujhe dekha tha,
Mere apne pyaare desh ki mitti me khada hua.
Therefore I fain would consecrate a lay
Unto thy honor, Tree, beloved of those
Who now in blessed sleep, for aye, repose,
Dearer than life to me, alas! were they!
Mayst thou be numbered when my days are done
With deathless trees—like those in Borrowdale,
Under whose awful branches lingered pale
“Fear, trembling Hope, and Death, the skeleton,
And Time the shadow;” and though weak the verse
That would thy beauty fain, oh fain rehearse,
May Love defend thee from Oblivion’s curse.
Isliye main chahti hoon ek geet likhna,
Teri izzat ke liye, O mere pyare darakht,
Jin logon ne tere neeche waqt bitaya,
Aur jo ab hamesha ki neend so gaye,
Jo mujhe jaan se bhi zyada pyare the!
Jab meri zindagi khatam ho jaye,
To tujhe un amar darakhton ki list me shamil kiya jaye,
Jo hamesha rehte hain, jaise Borrowdale ke bade ped,
Jinke neeche maut, dar, aur waqt ki parchhayi ruki thi.
Aur chahe meri kavita kamzor ho,
Jo teri khoobsurti ko poori tarah bayan na kar sake,
Par mera pyaar tujhe bhoolne ki baddua se bacha sake!
