The Bangle Sellers
SAROJINI NAIDU
Stanza 1
Bangle sellers are we who bear
Hum chooriyan bechne walay hain jo le kar jate hain
Our shining loads to the temple fair…
Apni chamakti hui chooriyan mandir ke mele mein…
Who will buy these delicate, bright
Kaun khareedega ye naazuk aur khoobsurat chooriyan?
Rainbow-tinted circles of light?
Ye chooriyan rangin hain, bilkul rainbow jaisi aur roshni ki tarah chamakti hain.
Lustrous tokens of radiant lives,
Ye chamakti hui chooriyan khush aur roshan zindagiyon ki nishani hain,
For happy daughters and happy wives.
Ye khush betiyon aur khush biwiyon ke liye hain.
Stanza 2
Some are meet for a maiden’s wrist,
Kuch chooriyan jawan larkiyon ke haath ke liye hain,
Silver and blue as the mountain mist,
Ye chandi aur neeli hain, jaise pahadon ki dhund/kohara ho.
Some are flushed like the buds that dream
Kuch chooriyan gulabi hain, jaise kaliyan jo khilne ko tayar hain,
On the tranquil brow of a woodland stream,
Jaise jungle ke nadee ke pass ka sukoon aur khamoshi.
Some are aglow wth the bloom that cleaves
Kuch chooriyan taazah patton ki tarah chamak rahi hain,
To the limpid glory of new born leaves
Jo saaf roshni mein khoobsurat lagti hain.
Stanza 3
Some are like fields of sunlit corn,
Kuch chooriyan sooraj ki roshni mein khet ki tarah sunehri hain,
Meet for a bride on her bridal morn,
Ye dulhan ke shadi ke din pe pehne ke liye bilkul sahi hain.
Some, like the flame of her marriage fire,
Kuch chooriyan laal hain, shadi ki aag ki tarah chamak rahi hain,
Or, rich with the hue of her heart’s desire,
Ya gehre rang ki hain, jo dulhan ke armanon/ichchhaen ko dikhati hain.
Tinkling, luminous, tender, and clear,
Ye chooriyan pyara sa awaz karti hain, chamakti hain, naram aur saaf hain,
Like her bridal laughter and bridal tear.
Bilkul us khushi aur aansu ki tarah jo dulhan apne shadi ke din mehsoos karti hai.
Stanza 4
Some are purple and gold flecked grey
Kuch chooriyan baingni aur sunehri hain, jismein halki si grey shamil hai,
For she who has journeyed through life midway,
Ye un aurton ke liye hain jo zindagi ke beech mein hain.
Whose hands have cherished, whose love has blest,
Unke haathon ne pyar se apno ki dekhbhaal ki hai, aur unka pyar sab par barkat/aasheervaad hai,
And cradled fair sons on her faithful breast,
Unhone apne betey ko apne pyaar se pala hai.
And serves her household in fruitful pride,
Wo apne ghar ko fakhr se sambhalti hain,
And worships the gods at her husband’s side.
Aur apne shauhar/pati ke saath milkar khuda/bhagwan ki ibadat/pooja karti hain.
