Summary of Macbeth in English

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a tragic story about ambition, greed, guilt, fate, and justice. It tells how a brave and loyal soldier becomes a cruel king because of his uncontrolled desire for power. The story also shows that evil actions always lead to suffering and punishment.

The story begins on a cold, misty day in Scotland. Two brave generals, Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, and Banquo, are returning home after winning a great battle for King Duncan. They have defeated the enemy and are proud of their victory. Their faces shine with happiness and triumph because they have served their king faithfully and brought honour to Scotland.

As Macbeth and Banquo ride across the lonely heath, a strong wind suddenly begins to blow. Three mysterious witches appear before them. They seem old, ugly, and frightening.

The first witch greets Macbeth as the Thane of Glamis, which is already true.

The second witch calls him the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is surprised because he has never been given that title.

The third witch greets him as the future King of Scotland. Macbeth is shocked because King Duncan is still alive, and his two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, are the rightful heirs to the throne.

The witches then turn to Banquo and make another strange prophecy. They say that although Banquo will never become king himself, his descendants will one day rule Scotland.

After making these predictions, the witches disappear into the mist as mysteriously as they came.

Macbeth and Banquo cannot decide whether what they have seen is real or just an illusion.

Soon after, two horsemen sent by King Duncan arrive with important news. They tell Macbeth that the king has rewarded him for his bravery by making him the new Thane of Cawdor.

Macbeth is amazed because the witches’ second prophecy has come true almost immediately. Banquo warns him not to trust the witches because evil powers often tell small truths to lead people into great destruction.

However, Macbeth cannot stop thinking about the third prophecy—that he will become king someday.

The messengers also tell Macbeth that King Duncan will spend the night as a guest in Macbeth’s castle.

Macbeth writes a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, describing the witches’ prophecies.

Lady Macbeth is extremely ambitious. As soon as she hears the news, she begins dreaming of becoming queen. She believes that the prophecy should be fulfilled immediately.

When Macbeth reaches home, they discuss the witches’ predictions. Although Macbeth is horrified by the thought of murdering his own king, Lady Macbeth persuades him that this is the perfect opportunity to seize the throne.

Slowly, Macbeth’s ambition becomes stronger than his conscience.

That night, after King Duncan falls asleep, Macbeth quietly enters his room carrying two daggers that Lady Macbeth has placed there.

Although he is trembling with fear and guilt, he quickly stabs the sleeping king before he has time to change his mind.

The terrible crime is done.

The next morning, the entire castle is thrown into confusion. Everyone is horrified to discover that King Duncan has been murdered.

Fearing that they too may be killed, Duncan’s sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee Scotland.

Since the princes have escaped, the Scottish nobles choose Macbeth to become the new king because he is a brave general whom King Duncan trusted.

Thus, the witches’ third prophecy comes true.

Although Macbeth has become king, he does not find peace or happiness.

He remembers the witches’ prophecy that Banquo’s descendants will become kings. Afraid that Banquo’s family may one day take the throne, Macbeth secretly arranges Banquo’s murder.

Banquo is killed, but his son, Fleance, escapes.

Soon afterwards, Macbeth holds a grand feast and invites the Scottish nobles.

During the banquet, Macbeth suddenly sees Banquo’s ghost, covered in blood, sitting in Banquo’s chair.

No one else can see the ghost.

Macbeth becomes terrified and begins speaking to it. The guests think their king has become mentally unstable.

The ghost symbolizes Macbeth’s guilty conscience. From this moment onward, Macbeth begins losing his peace of mind.

Frightened and desperate, Macbeth goes back to the witches to learn more about his future.

At midnight, he finds them in a lonely cave, where they are preparing strange magic in a bubbling cauldron.

The witches give him two important warnings.

The first tells him:

“Beware of Macduff, the Thane of Fife.”

The second tells him:

“You will not be defeated until Birnam Wood moves to your castle.”

Macbeth feels relieved because he believes that a forest can never move.

However, he decides that Macduff is dangerous and must be killed.

Macbeth now becomes a cruel and heartless ruler.

He orders the murder of Macduff’s innocent wife and children, along with anyone who seems to threaten his throne.

Scotland becomes a land filled with fear and suffering.

Although Lady Macbeth had encouraged Macbeth to commit the murder, she cannot escape her guilty conscience.

She begins having terrible nightmares.

She dreams that her hands are always covered with King Duncan’s blood, and no amount of washing can remove the stains.

These imaginary bloodstains represent her overwhelming guilt.

She becomes deeply depressed and eventually takes her own life.

Meanwhile, Macduff joins Malcolm, King Duncan’s eldest son.

Together, they gather an army to remove Macbeth from the throne.

Before marching to Macbeth’s castle, Macduff orders every soldier to cut down a branch from Birnam Wood and carry it while marching.

This hides the true size of their army.

From a distance, Macbeth’s soldiers think that Birnam Wood itself is moving.

The witches’ prophecy is coming true.

Macbeth rushes outside and realizes that the impossible has happened.

He finally understands that the witches had deceived him with clever words.

A fierce battle follows.

Macbeth fights bravely but eventually comes face to face with Macduff.

Macduff kills Macbeth, ending his cruel rule.

Before dying, Macbeth regrets trusting the witches and realizes that his ambition has destroyed everything.

After Macbeth’s death, Malcolm becomes the rightful King of Scotland.

Peace returns to the kingdom.

Later, Banquo’s son, Fleance, becomes king, fulfilling the witches’ final prophecy that Banquo’s descendants would rule Scotland.

Thus, every prophecy made by the witches eventually comes true.

Moral

Macbeth teaches that ambition is good only when guided by honesty and morality. When ambition becomes greed, it leads to destruction. Wrong actions may bring temporary success, but they ultimately result in guilt, suffering, and punishment. Truth and justice always prevail in the end.

Raaste mein achanak tez hawa chalti hai aur teen darawni witches (jadugarniyan) unke saamne aa jaati hain.

Pehli witch Macbeth ko Thane of Glamis kehti hai. Yeh baat bilkul sach hoti hai kyunki Macbeth pehle se hi Thane of Glamis hota hai.

Doosri witch usse Thane of Cawdor kehti hai. Macbeth hairaan ho jata hai kyunki usse abhi tak yeh title nahi mila hota.

Teesri witch kehti hai,

“Ek din tum Scotland ke Badshah (King) banoge.”

Yeh sunkar Macbeth aur bhi zyada hairaan ho jata hai kyunki King Duncan zinda hai aur uske do bete Malcolm aur Donalbain bhi maujood hain.

Phir witches Banquo ki taraf dekh kar kehti hain ki Banquo kabhi khud king nahi banega, lekin uski aane wali nasal (descendants) Scotland par hukumat karegi.

Itna keh kar witches dhund mein gayab ho jaati hain.

Macbeth aur Banquo samajh hi nahi paate ki yeh sab haqeeqat thi ya sirf ek khwab.

Kuch der baad King Duncan ke bheje hue do sipahi aate hain.

Banquo Macbeth ko samjhata hai ki buri taaqatein (evil powers) pehle chhoti sach baat batati hain taaki insaan unpar bharosa kare aur baad mein uska nuksan ho.

Lekin Macbeth ke dimagh mein ab sirf ek hi baat chal rahi hoti hai—

“Kya main waqai ek din king banunga?”

King Duncan faisla karta hai ke woh us raat Macbeth ke castle mein mehmaan ban kar rukega.

Macbeth apni biwi Lady Macbeth ko khat likhkar witches ki peshgoiyan aur king ke aane ki khabar deta hai.

Lady Macbeth bahut ambitious aur taqat ki bhooki aurat hoti hai.

Woh kehti hai,

“Yahi mauka hai. Agar King Duncan ko maar diya jaye to tum king ban sakte ho.”

Shuru mein Macbeth bahut ghabra jata hai kyunki woh apne hi badshah ka qatl nahi karna chahta.

Lekin dheere dheere uski power ki khwahish (ambition) uski insaniyat aur zameer par haavi ho jaati hai.

Raat ko jab King Duncan gehri neend mein sota hai, Macbeth chupke se uske kamre mein jaata hai.

Lady Macbeth pehle hi do daggers (chhuriyan) wahan rakh chuki hoti hai.

Is tarah Scotland ka badshah qatl kar diya jata hai.

Subah sab logon ko pata chalta hai ki King Duncan ka qatl ho gaya hai.

Har taraf afra-tafri mach jaati hai.

Malcolm aur Donalbain apni jaan bachane ke liye Scotland se bhaag jaate hain.

Iske baad Scotland ke nobles Macbeth ko naya king bana dete hain.

Is tarah witches ki teesri peshgoi bhi sach ho jaati hai.

King banne ke baad bhi Macbeth ko sukoon nahi milta.

Dar ke maare Macbeth Banquo ka qatl karwa deta hai.

Lekin Banquo ka beta Fleance bach kar bhaag jata hai.

Ek din Macbeth apne mahal mein ek badi dawat (feast) rakhta hai.

Achanak usse Banquo ka khoon se bhara hua bhoot nazar aata hai.

Sirf Macbeth hi us bhoot ko dekh sakta hai.

Witches usse do baatein batati hain.

Pehli:

“Macduff se hoshiyar rehna.”

Doosri:

“Jab tak Birnam Wood tumhare castle ki taraf chal kar nahi aata, tumhe koi hara nahi sakta.”

Macbeth hans padta hai.

Woh sochta hai,

“Jungle kabhi chal sakta hai kya?”

Usse lagta hai ki woh hamesha mehfooz rahega.

Macbeth Macduff se darr kar uski biwi aur bachchon ka bhi qatl karwa deta hai.

Ab poora Scotland zulm aur khauf se bhar jata hai.

Lady Macbeth ko ab chain nahi milta.

Har raat use khwab aata hai ki uske haathon par Duncan ka khoon laga hua hai jo kabhi saaf nahi hota.

Yeh khoon uske guilt ki nishani hota hai.

Aakhirkar woh depression ka shikar ho jaati hai aur apni jaan le leti hai.

Macduff aur Malcolm milkar ek badi fauj tayyar karte hain.

Macbeth samajh jata hai ki witches ki baat sach ho gayi.

Macbeth aur Macduff ke darmiyan sakht jang hoti hai.

Aakhir mein Macduff Macbeth ko maar deta hai.

Baad mein Banquo ka beta Fleance bhi Scotland ka ruler banta hai.

Is tarah witches ki har peshgoiyan / bhavishyavaniya poori ho jaati hain.

Moral

Macbeth humein sikhata hai ki ambition hona buri baat nahi hai, lekin jab ambition had se zyada badh jaaye aur insaan ko galat raaste par le jaaye, to uska anjaam tabahi hota hai. Lalach, power ki bhook aur bure faisle insaan ki zindagi barbaad kar dete hain. Aakhir mein sachchai aur insaaf ki hamesha jeet hoti hai.
