Alliteration

Metaphor

A direct comparison between two unlike things without using "like" or "as".

"The classroom was a zoo during recess."
"Her voice was music to his ears."

Personification

Giving human characteristics to non-human things.

"The wind whispered through the trees."
"The flowers danced in the breeze."

Imagery

Vivid descriptive language that appeals to the senses.

"The sweet, juicy peaches dripped down my chin as I bit into them."
"The acrid smell of burning leaves filled the crisp autumn air."

Symbolism

When an object or action represents something beyond its literal meaning.

"The dove represents peace."
"The road not taken symbolizes life choices."

Irony

When the opposite of what is expected occurs.

"A fire station burns down."
"The name of Britain's biggest dog was Tiny."
